a portrait of you

welcome...

In terms of who I am, I can’t really answer that. What am I but a conglomeration of the people and experiences around me? In America, I am seen as too Asian. I eat different foods, I celebrate different holidays, I even talk differently. In China, I am seen as too American. I eat different foods, I celebrate different holidays, I even talk differently. It’s a delicate dance between the two. I feel like I need to hide what makes me unique so others can feel special too. Symbols that represent the two cultures I come from are diminished into the plain clothes I wear today. Although I am not embarrassed by who I am, I am scared to show the full truth.

I try not to step on the toes of those in the same dance.

As I grow older, I fear I am straying further and further away from the person I was made to be. Doing what others want me to with the intent of fulfilling the image of me they’ve created in their minds. But, I am learning everyday that the world is mine. It lies blanketed in my perspective. I cannot live another man’s life the same way I will not last living within the confines of another man’s reality. I must break free from the routine I’ve created for myself. The old habits inhibit the creation of my true self.

For which I am endlessly creating myself.

A struggle in will, this incarnation is learning to develop strength. Conditions force her to stand alone, very often with the absence of shoulders to lean on. Eventually, she must learn that if her life is to be better, it must be created by herself. Ultimately, when the mind is made up, there is little that can sway this destiny. Isolation is a self imposed prerequisite for gathering strength. She must learn to overcome all doubts within herself. Once determination takes root, there is no stopping the path towards success.

In this, the stars align.
